Song 'Alone Yet Not Alone' Will be Performed at the 22nd Annual Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards
HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. (ANS) -- The Oscar may not want it, but the entertainment industry will hear the banned Christian song "Alone Yet Not Alone" at the 22nd Annual Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards Gala.
In an unprecedented move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences rescinded its Oscar nomination for the song, which appears in the American colonial epic, "Alone Yet Not Alone," when it discovered that the composer, Bruce Broughton, had sent a short email bringing the song to the attention of Oscar voters.
Commenting in a news release on Broughton's action, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said, "No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage."
According to a news release made available to the ASSIST News Service, the Movieguide® Awards will now feature singer and disability advocate Joni Eareckson Tada performing the song at its Feb. 7 event, to be held at the Universal Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Speaking in a statement, Eareckson Tada said, "While I can only imagine the disappointment of music writer Bruce Broughton and lyricist Dennis Spiegel in the rescinding of their Oscar nomination, it in no way detracts from either the song's beauty or its message."
She added, "I was grateful for the attention the nomination brought to this worthy song and the inspirational film behind it, as well as to the ongoing work of Joni and Friends to people affected by disabilities. The decision by the Academy to rescind the nomination may well bring even further attention, and I only hope it helps to further extend the message and impact of the song."
Eareckson Tada said she has no insight into how the entertainment industry works, so she won't speculate about the rescinding of the nomination.
However, she said, "I was honored to be invited to sing the song and it will always be a treasured experience."
