Watch it here: London UK New Year Eve Midnight Fireworks Show
Always a big-budget spectacle, the free display is deployed beside and from the London Eye and regularly draws crowds of up to 250,000 people. Typically the event routinely begins at 10pm on December 31. At that point a DJ typically plays to spectators, right up until Big Ben strikes midnight and a blaze of fireworks explode from the Eye. Lasting 10 or so minutes, the display is concluded with a mass rendition of Auld Land Syne.
This year the display breaks with convention somewhat by introducing what organisers describe as the world's first ""multi-sensory fireworks display". Crowds congregating around the London Eye will watch the countdown as clouds of fruit-fragranced and -flavoured mist waft overhead.
Last night I passed the London Eye as organisers were performing a test run of the visuals used in advance of midnight's fireworks display and crowds can be confident that this year's display will match those seen on previous years. The 27-storey Shell Centre will provide a canvas for projections (frequently depicting fruit) and cascades of colour will revolve around the rim of the London Eye and illuminate the adjacent Marriott Hotel County Hall.
