Missing Candles

“For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.”

Psalm 18: 28, 29, 31, 32

King James Version

I received a series of emails last year from a pastor who was discouraged and defeated. He told me that he no longer had a desire to pastor a church where there was so much hatred and criticism. He said “I am not going to be a pastor any more”. The Bible says “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance”. (Romans 11:29) When God calls us to serve Him in a certain position, He never tells us that it is okay to stop serving Him. Even when we retire from the position we are still called to serve Him. There are many people who have become missing candles in their service to Him.

There are times when the criticism that is hurled at us becomes overwhelming and our candles, our service to Jesus, eventually fades and dies because of the lack of encouragement. Only Jesus can put the light back into our hearts and a renewed determination to serve Him no matter how much criticism and sarcasm we receive. We can’t keep going in our own strength. I received a criticizing email just this morning but I have learned not to reply to these emails. I go to Jesus and ask Him to comfort and encourage me and renew my strength.

If today your heart is heavy and weary because of the repeated attacks of criticism and sarcasm, run to Jesus and allow Him to light your candle of service once again. He will be faithful to encourage, comfort and put the joy, peace, assurance and hope back into your heart.
