There is no growth without change. And there is no change without loss. And there is no loss without pain. A church that wants to grow without going through growing pains is like a woman who says, "I want to have a baby but I don't want to go through labor." Is the pain worth it? Yes, it's worth it. People need the Lord and as long as one person doesn't know Christ we have to keep reaching out.
SPOKANE, Wash. (RNS) The Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union speech introduced many Americans to Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. While those of us in Spokane are already familiar with our congresswoman, little is known about her alma mater, Pensacola Christian College.
I would like to ask everyone to take a few minutes as soon as you see this and ask Our Lord for a special favor this Wednesday, at the March for Life. Currently the forecast is for a high of only 20 degrees, and this after a day of snow and ice. The driving will likely be treacherous, and spending five or six hours outside in this temperature can be very dangerous, especially for children.
Passion is what energizes life. It turns the impossible into possible. In fact if you don't have any passion in your life, ministry will become boring, dull, routine, monotonous. I'll go so far as say if you don't have passion in your life you are not living. You are existing. God made you to live a passionate life and to serve Him and His people with vitality. With vibrancy. With energy. With enthusiasm. He wants you to have this in your life.
Everyone knows that before you take your car on a road trip...you really should do more than fill up the gas tank. You might check the tire pressure and take it in for an oil change. You might decide it's time for new windshield wipers or even a new set of tires.
Getting ready for the next leg in your small group ministry adventure? Maybe it's time you took your ministry through my signature 10 point checklist! Review your small group ministry's present state.
(RNS) California pastor Ryan Bell has a novel New Year's resolution. For one year, he proclaimed, he will "live without God." It's an odd resolution for an ordained minister, former church pastor, teacher at two highly regarded Christian universities and church consultant. Yet for the next 12 months, Bell, 42, plans to refrain from praying, reading the Bible and thinking about God at all.
If God’s objective for every believer is to transform us into total Christlikeness, then the objective of preaching is to motivate people to develop Christlike convictions (to think like Jesus), Christlike character (to feel like Jesus), and Christlike conduct (to act like Jesus). Every other objective of preaching is secondary. At the end of the sermon, if people aren’t being transformed in how they think, feel, and act, I’ve missed the mark as a preacher.
From November 1-17, 2013, Dr. Leela Manasseh, member of the WEA Global Human Trafficking Task Force (GHTTF), traveled through various parts of India to speak to local Church leaders about the pertinent issue of Human Trafficking. She spoke about the Biblical mandate given to the Church which is the Body of Christ: "We have God's clarion call to wake up, wake up, and implement God's plan of actions."
There are still mornings when I don’t care about my sexual purity. I had a lot of these days early in my recovery, but I’m 5 years into my recovery and still have rough days. Paul struggled (in Romans 7) because he didn’t do the things he knew he should do. He also did things he knew he shouldn’t do. This is not what I’m talking about. There are days when I don’t want to do righteousness. I want to do unrighteousness.
Pornographer Al Goldstein, a onetime millionaire who pioneered hardcore pornography in print, died today in a Brooklyn hospice at the age of 77. He went bankrupt in 2003, sold his $1.7 million mansion in Florida in 2004, and moved into a Florida homeless shelter. He later lived in his car, on in-laws' floor in Queens, and on various friends' couches.
Let me be spit spot, crystal clear here at the start: Saving Mr. Banks is a wonderful film. SEE... SOON. But when you think of Walt Disney collaborating with "P.L.Travers," the creative imagination that hatched Mary Poppins, you are not likely to imagine this film...
Saddleback's purpose statement has been quietly guiding much of our decision-making for nearly three decades. Our purpose statement is: To bring people to Jesus and membership in his family, develop them to Christlike maturity, and equip them for their ministry in the church and their life mission in the world in order to magnify God's name.
On Christmas Eve, the Gospel reading is taken from once again from Matthew 1."Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly. 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not
I do not believe for one second that Mr. Robertson wanted to encourage hate, bigotry, or would support anything that would intentionally cause pain for someone else. But we are all old enough to know that people suffer horribly when government gets it wrong. We Christians can make the lives of others better by simply being who we say we are, Christ-like. God designed our Earth so that the blessing of rain falls on the just and the unjust alike. We can follow his example.
While I was getting some writing done recently, I had the television on and an episode Law & Order: Special Victims Unit was on. It was actually a pretty interesting episode entitled “Smut” and because of what we talk about on this site, I’m sure you can see just what caught (and held) my attention.
"Mary Poppins" is one of the most recognized names in 20th century literary and in film history. Released by Disney Studios in 1964, this iconic story today is not only celebrating its 50th anniversary as a classic American film...
God’s law points out our sin. Without the law, there would be no such thing as sin. But God also gave us something else. He gave us His grace. It’s a beautiful thing. Without it, we’d be in a world of hurt, that’s for sure. But many think this grace gives us a license to sin. Some think that the death of Jesus on the cross negates the law and that we are free to do whatever we want.
When does looking become lusting? Where is line that separates normal, healthy, God-given sexual response from sinful, destructive lust? This is an important question for men struggling with sexual temptation, and also for their spouses.
"I know. It's all wrong. By all rights we shouldn't even be here!" -Samwise Gamgee to Frodo Baggins in Osgiliath near the end of The Two Towers movie. From the first time I heard it, I always thought this line was surely a nod to the Tolkien aficionados in the movie audience...
I became a Christian in my late teens, and not long after that I came to acknowledge that I was gay. I was committed to celibacy, because having explored the different points of view in the church about homosexuality, I didn’t find the more accepting attitude to same-sex relationships convincing from a biblical point of view.
A group of militant feminists profaned the Cathedral of San Petronio in Bologna this past Monday. Masked with hoods that recall the extreme left-wing Russian Anarchists, abortion and aberrosexual activists protested against the rejection of the Estrela Report by the European Parliament. Before the altar, the Church opponents unfurled a banner reading: "You Occupy the Counseling Centers - We Fill the Churches" and shouted in chorus: "Get the Church Out of Our Ovaries.
Dear Marriage Supporter, The gay lobby bullies are at it again. This time they've attacked one of the most popular Christians in America — Phil Robertson, patriarch of Duck Dynasty's Robertson family. They are calling him "vile" and say he is pushing "extreme stereotypes" and "lies." The grossly misnamed Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and their Hollywood ally GLAAD have demanded that Phil be punished and, incredibly, Wednesday night A&E succumbed to the gay bullies and suspended Phil Robertson!
First a couple of essentials about temptation:
Temptation comes from 3 places: The Devil, other people, and our own hearts.
God does not tempt us (James 1)
We cannot eliminate temptation, but we can minimize it
