Prosperity in the Bible

By Tercius

God promises prosperity for his true followers but these promises are sometimes misunderstood. So let us take a look at some of the Bible verses that discuss prosperity.

On his website televangelist Benny Hinn quotes the first part of Proverbs 28:20 KJV which says, "A faithful man shall abound with blessings." The full verse says, "A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent."

Another verse cited by proponents of the prosperity gospel is 3 John 1:2 NASB which says, "Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers."

Ecclesiastes 7:14 teaches us, "In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him."

There is one more Bible passage I want to point out: Matthew 6:19-20.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

There are four lessons found in these verses:

1. Do not try to become rich quickly.
2. Prosperity in the Bible can refer to good health and spiritual health.
3. God is responsible for prosperity and difficult times.
4. Our treasures should be in things that are eternal. We cannot take our wealth to heaven when we die.
