In case you haven't heard or noticed the red and pink cut out hearts and overpriced boxes of chocolates at your neighborhood store, Valentines Day is just around the corner.
A day where love is celebrated and Prozac prescriptions are refilled simultaneously. I love Valentines Day so much
If you're thinking this book is written just for girls, I might suggest otherwise. I decided to read this book because I felt it was important for my relationship with my girlfriend. She shared with me some of the things she was learning and I thought it might be helpful for me in understanding more of her heart if I read it as well.
Every leader needs mentors and models - typically other leaders just ahead of where we are in our growth and our journey. And every leader also needs to be mentoring and modeling those just behind us. This is the only way for discipleship to take on the multi-generational nature described by Paul in 2 Timothy 2:2
Satan's favorite way to destroy a church and its effectiveness is to make it ingrown by creating dissension. If you've been a Pastor for any length of time, you've seen this happen. Much of the email that we receive from Pastors pertains to handling conflicts and sorting out the relational issues that occur in the church. You may have personally seen a good church go under or be neutralized because of dissension.
If you are reading this you most likely have come to the realization that you have a problem. And that problem is that you are a slave to sexual sin. The good news is that you are here looking for a solution. I know first hand what it feels like to be in bondage to this disease.
Does Porn dehumanize people? Excuse me for being blunt here but if you really have to think about this you may have assumed room temperature. I just read a story a few days ago where there were about 40 arrests made across the United States and overseas involving a child porn ring that included emails sent where they talked about kidnapping and eating children.
Last night I had the pleasure of leading a discussion on sexuality with a group of male students at a Christian University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Many of these men represent the future of our church leadership.
I have cheated on my wife a thousand times. I have lied to over a hundred friends and family. I have murdered countless girls’ dreams on the computer screen while feeding my need for pleasure. The opportunity has been given to me five hundred times to just walk away; but I told myself I just couldn’t. I have failed over and over and over again in my life- and that is why, I now succeed.
I have received many gifts over the years. Big gifts, little gifts, edible gifts, perishable gifts, gifts I don't remember, and gifts I will never forget. Let me suggest to you that this holiday season you give yourself a gift that will last for the rest of your life: the gift of sobriety (and it sure beats your aunt's custom-knitted sweater!)
And, tragically the church can become just as sex-obsessed as society around it. As the world has idolised sex in almost any context, the church has idolised it within marriage. So, keen Christians too often rush into marriage in their early 20s so that they can have sex. The danger of this is they may then discover that desire is almost all they have in common with the person they have now committed themselves to for life. Early marriage has become the panacea for Christians struggling with sex
Why do I experience same-sex attraction? Read around a bit and you'll soon find that there are a whole host of theories to choose from. Some are linked with a 'cure', but we do not endorse this simplistic idea. Others make the point that there is no cause. Some are part of a blame game. Still others maintain that there's no one to blame because there's nothing wrong.
Have you ever heard of intimacy anorexia? The basic idea is that we try to control our lives by withholding intimacy from others. I ordered this book titled “Intimacy Anorexia” subtitled “Healing the Hidden Addiction in Your Marriage” by Douglas Weiss, Ph.D. This guy works with people who have sexual addictions and he says that most addicts have this addiction too. Hmmmm? Dan H
News item? I don’t think any man who is looking to overcome the porn addiction would say that this is news to them that porn has caused them to struggle sexually. And, it isn’t too surprising that you don’t read about that in the news. What do we read? Man Faces 80 Counts for Child Porn ---- Man Faces 43 Counts Involving Child Porn ------ Former Police Officer Arrested for Rape of 14 Year Old. Yeah, that makes the news.
I am writing this after returning recently from Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. What an education! I feel like I just took an immersion course in Middle East studies, Islam, and missions. There is nothing like being there to learn what it means to be there!
Porn carries a heavy price. Part of this price is the more you look at porn, the less sexual satisfaction you get. You get desensitized, and you go looking for something more exciting. You may start by looking at the JC Penny lingerie ads. But before too long those don’t do it for you anymore. And then you think, “Hey I’ve got internet.”
Pastors and people in ministry feel the burden to project a perfect image because we, the sheep, demand it. In subtle ways we affirm them for their "perfection." In obvious ways we snipe at them for their imperfections. If the pastor's wife is not leading a women's Bible study or working in the church nursery, if pastor's son gets his ear pierced, or if pastor preaches about giving, heaven help them. The sheep start bleating. No wonder pastors feel isolated! Everything they do and say is being s
Since day one XXXchurch has been about reaching people. Lost people, broken people … people who need help. This has always been our heart and it is what drives us to go to adult conventions with a simple message, “Jesus loves you.” The fact that we do this is something that often gets a lot of attention. Sometimes it’s positive, sometimes it is negative.
As a pastor, you get to hear a lot of secrets; but how often do you get to tell your own? I don't know if you have ever told somebody a secret, but it feels really good. Whether it's a secret about some new direction your life is taking, or about the surprise party you're throwing for your best friend's birthday, or the news about a baby on the way, getting it off your chest and into the air, into someone else's brain, is a freeing sensation.
When I was a teenager my dad would call my hands “vice grips”. This meant a lot to me because he was saying that I had a strong grip. On the farm you use your hands a lot for gripping tools, milking cows, lifting bales and such. Hands are very useful appendages. My hands got beat up a bit too because I used them as hammers sometimes rather than using an actual tool.
Being someone who has been addicted pornography most of my adult life I have been through the process of emotional ups and downs. I have had to deal with feels of anger, depression, guilt, and shame. All of these emotions are normal for people but, they where intensified due to my behavior.
Q: I don't have any use for someone who puts on a big show and claims to be a good Christian when they're in church or with religious people, but then acts like a harsh tyrant around their family. My uncle is like this, and I can't stand that kind of hypocrisy.
I’m an engineer so I understand design for purpose. Part of my job is to check the operator’s manuals that are written for the products I design. Man, is that boring! When I am not falling asleep I am thinking what a waste of time this is because people don’t read these manuals anyway.
Confession is an integral part of recovery. Did you know that a restored relationship comes only through confession? You might think that having a changed life is enough, well it is not. Your changed life is a good thing for you, but what about the carnage you have left in the lives of other people? I wonder what God thinks about all of this? I wonder what God sees as He looks into these things?
