Worth The Wait: God Is Always Working in Ways We Cannot See
I don't like waiting! I don't like to wait in traffic, airports, or restaurants.I don't even like to wait to give a Christmas present to someone, and usually end up giving it early! Why? Because I can't stand waiting! How many times have you prayed for something, and then waited...and waited...and waited for the answer? Maybe you're still waiting? In my song, "He Never Sleeps", the lyrics are, "when you've prayed every prayer that you know how to pray; Just remember the Lord will hear, and the answer is on it's way." Verse two says, "Do you feel that the Lord has forgotten your need? Just remember that God is always working in ways we cannot see."
Well, it's easier to sing it than to live it! There are many prayers that I have prayed, hoping for an immediate answer, and I'm still waiting. And yet I know that even at this moment, God is working in ways I cannot see, and His answer may not always come in ways that I expect. God is teaching me to have faith, because without faith it is impossible to please Him. Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith, it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."
Something happens to us between our initial prayer and God's provision. God is interested in who we become in the process of waiting for the answer. Yes, He is able to answer our prayers, and He still is a God of miracles, but He wants us to learn to trust Him through the process, however long it may be.
Chapter 1 of the book of Hebrews is filled with examples of people who trusted God. By faith, Abel...by faith, Enoch...by faith, Noah...by faith, Abraham...and throughout the entire chapter we read great stories of the champions of faith. For example, when Abraham was 75 years old, God gave him a promise that he would be the Father of many nations. Isaac wasn't born until Abraham was 100 years old, 25 years of waiting for God's promise to be fulfilled! Laura and I waited 12 years until our first child was born, and in 7 years, God gave us 5 children! It was a miracle! But there were many days when I thought our prayer to have children would never be answered. I was getting discouraged in the waiting process.
We live in the day of high speed internet, fast food, supersonic jets, and with our cell phone, we can download enormous amounts of information in seconds. It's hard for us to wait for anything! And yet, it's during this time of waiting, not seeing the answer, that we learn to trust. Our faith is being strengthened and our character is being developed.
Maybe you're waiting on God to answer a prayer for a health issue, a job, healing in a relationship, or a financial need. Be encouraged, Philippians 4:19 tells us, "God will supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Ephesians 3:20 says, "God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we could ever ask or think!" Jesus taught us to pray, Give us this day our daily bread. I would like to have my daily bread stored up for a year, or 5 years! But Jesus knew, in the process of trusting Him daily, between our prayer and His provision, our faith is being developed, we are becoming more like Him, and when the answer comes, it will be worth the wait!
